Package: mozilla-browser
Version: 2:0.9.9-1
Severity: normal

The scripts that start mozilla (like /usr/bin/mozilla-0.9.9) try to
use an existing mozilla instance instead of starting a new one (with
the -remote option).

This causes 2 problems, but since they're related I'm putting them
into one bug report.

The first problem is that it is very hard to make mozilla start with a
new instance vs. an existing one. The script uses some very funky
heuristics to choose between the two options, and they don't seem
relevant to anything. It seems that it will use an existing instance
if you either don't specify any arguments on the command line (not
even a nonsense word) or if you specify a few particular arguments
(like -mail). This is completely undocumented -- in fact if you type
"mozilla -help", it tells you that it will only use an existing
instance if you use the -remote argument. Thus, if you don't want
mozilla to use an existing instance, you have to read the shell script
and decipher its meaning.

The second problem is that this screws up the debian policy of
allowing multiple versions of mozilla to be installed simultaneously.
If I have a mozilla-browser-cvs open, it becomes impossible for me to
even RUN a mozilla-0.9.9 browser -- unless I read the script and think
up a hack like typing "mozilla -asdfljlsdfjk".

This seems like an upstream bug, but I can imagine how it would work
OK on a system with only one version of mozilla installed. It
*doesn't* work on debian, since there can be multiple mozilla's.

It especially doesn't work on *my* system. I run a mozilla instance
on a remote machine (over a dsl line) that filters my IMAP email, and
read email on my local machine in mozilla-cvs. Periodically, however,
I want to use mozilla-0.9.9 (either to avoid a bug, or get antialasing
or whatnot). Now, sometimes it will just use the existing mozilla-cvs
process, and sometimes it will use the remote process! This caught me
completely by surprise when I tried to run the new 0.9.9 release of
mozilla, and found that everything went *incredibly* slow. It took me
a day to realize that it was just opening a new window on my remote
dsl instance.

A simple hack that would at least help would be to document a
"-noremote" option in the mozilla script (and maybe
/usr/share/doc/mozilla-browser/README.Debian). That option doesn't
happen to actually mean anything to mozilla, but if you type *any*
option to mozilla at all, the script's heuristics will decide to start
a new process for whatever reason.
