I have a HP Photosmart S20 (USB) plugged in.
As per instructions in http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/x722.html
I have setup /etc/sane.d/hp.conf to say --

(As !root) sane-find-scanner says --

When I say

But when I run xsane, it spends a looooong time looking for a scanner
but doesn't find one.
When I watch using strace, I see the following last-few lines --

As I see it, he's able to open the file (getting FD 7) but after that
he's going nowhere in writing to it.

Finally, a small bugreport: the xsane manpage (right at the top) says
there's a commandline arg --debug-level but that just doesn't seem to
work.
