Subject: net-tools: ifconfig tr0 hw tr 40:00:de:ad:be:ef doesn't work on
2.4.0-testxx kernels
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
X-Mailer: bug 3.3.7
Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Package: net-tools
Version: 1.57-1
Severity: important

"ifconfig tr0 hw tr 40:00:de:ad:be:ef" works fine on 2.2.18 and below kernels
to set the Locally Administrated Address.

But on 2.4.0-test12 (and below), it gets:
$ifconfig tr0 hw tr 40:00:de:ad:be:ef
SIOCSIFHWADDR: Invalid argument

which leaves the true (hardware address):
$ ifconfig tr0
tr0 Link encap:16/4 Mbps Token Ring (New) HWaddr 00:60:94:55:8C:EF
          inet addr:9.51.81.11  Bcast:9.51.87.255  Mask:255.255.248.0

          inet6 addr: fe80::60:9455:8cef/10 Scope:Link
          IPX/Ethernet 802.2 addr:00000003:006094558CEF

          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          Interrupt:11 Base address:0x7400

I seem to recall seeing some patches (along time ago) to the upstream that
supported both 2.2 and 2.4 kernels - could probably dig up the source if
you need.
