Consider providing a version of package gnumeric built with configure
option --with-long-double. This option automatically sets gnumeric up
so that it uses long doubles internally instead of the usual doubles.
On linux amd64 and i386, long doubles are handled by the x87 instruction
set, providing a wider range of floating point exponents (approx 10^-4951
to 10^4932), approximately three digits extra digits of precision (useful
to mitigate issues of round-off in intermediate calculations) and a few
neat tricks like being able to exactly represent all 64 bit integers.
Where everything is set up right, it is simply necessary to build with
the --with-long-double passed to the configure script, and the compiler,
libraries, and build machinery take care of all the hard work. With
appropriate hardware support, it runs reasonably fast, and there is
little disadvantage to setting the option in many applications.
