Package: ntp-simple
Version: 1:4.2.0a-11
Severity: important
The /usr/sbin/ntpd server crashes silently when either of these two
time servers are included in /etc/ntp.conf:
server X.ns.verio.net
server Y.ns.verio.net
The above used to be great stratum 2 or 3 time servers, I don't know if
they still are or not, or whether verio is now shipping hostile crud
on the ntp port.
My greatest concern regarding this crash is that silent, data-dependent
crashes are often symptoms of security holes (i.e. buffer overflows,
etc). which is why I'm reporting this bug at severity level
'important'.
Reproducing this bug did not seem to depend on the other contents
of the ntp.conf file; in particular, it did not seem to depend on
having 'restrict' config lines.

Crashes caused by lack of IPv6 support in some part of the system have
been addressed in 4.2.2, which should take care of this bug.
