grip ceased responding three times at precisely the same point (to judge by the
length of the .wav file it had not quite finished creating) near the end
of a long track 2 of a particular CD.

Hi,

I'm closing this bug since there was no further information from you.

Most likely, you have catched a copy-protected cdrom, or hit a scratch
on the cdrom. Feel free to reopen the bug and provide real information
(which drive, which cdrom etc), otherwise I'm afraid that nobody is able
to help you.
