Dear Maintainer,
When using a VPN connection in Network Manager, the expected padlock icon does
not appear in nm-applet. Instead, it's replaced by the wired connection icon,
even if there is no wired connection available.
This behavior occurs in every icon theme installed by default, as well as
custom ones like Numix.
I am specifically reporting this as an issue in Cinnamon because the VPN icon
shows up fine in GNOME. Apologies if that assumption is incorrect.
Additionally, this bug is not present in the version of cinnamon (2.2.16-5)
that ships with Jessie.

This was fixed upstream in 3.0.6 by commit cf989676a ("Network applet:
Fixed icon not showing VPN status"), which handles exactly the case you
hit: with OpenVPN the applet saw the "tun" device as the main connection
and showed a generic/wired icon instead of the VPN one. PPTP does not use
a tun device, which is why it could not be reproduced with that protocol.
The fix reached Debian in 3.0.7-1 (the version already tested clean at the
time), and the same handling is still present in the current cinnamon
(6.6.9). Closing accordingly.
