What desktop environment are you using: GNOME fallback(classic), GNOME shell, something else? If it is GNOME fallback, is notification-daemon installed and running? If not, can you manually run /usr/lib/notification-daemon/notification-daemon and try again with notify-send. -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?
