After reading the bug reports here are some thoughts:

- IMHO, closing and tagging #322957 as wontfix was incorrect, there is no
"general way" as this cannot (and should not) be implemented in getty.
Bash should clear up the user's screen, if we agree that's a sane default
policy, not getty. That's just as dump as saying that the default
/etc/issue should have a Ctrl+L character to fix this request.
- Bug #117701 is a bug on how 'exit' behaves within a shell, fixed already
and only slightly related to this bug as it does not talk about the
implication of not blanking the screen.
- Bug #83609 is related to the use of '/dev/tty[0-9]' which was the wrong
approach IMHO to finding if you are a login tty. I think my patch is
better. It was also closed because #72327 was opened,
- Bug #63025 was closed because #72327 was opened, so let's see that one:
- Bug #72327 contains a good discussion on why people think this should be
enabled by default with people voicing for it (but dismissing the
'/dev/tty[0-9]) clear' patch as it is incorrect) and against it. It
actually says it was the default in potato and asks for it to be done for
root too (which is not a possibility, /etc/bash_logout could have been
however). As for the privacy implications discussed there, years ago,
certainly a lot of things have changed in Debian (the 'user' group, root
  dir permissions).

Regardless of these bugs, my request is to either make this the default _or_
add my example in bash-doc (along with other useless^Wuseful samples in
/usr/share/doc/bash-doc/examples/startup-files/).

It seems some people are against making it a default although I don't see
any reason why it couldn't be: there is a lot of popular demand and
users/admins that don't want it can just disable it by commenting it out or
removing it from /etc/skel. It just is a pain in the ass to do this every
time you setup a Debian system for the small benefit of those (few) that
don't want it per default.

I'm pretty sure we can setup a poll and the "blank screen per default" option
would win. People are a lot more worried about privacy issues now than 4
years ago.
