I don't know much about gimp-print but this error means that filter
/usr/bin/foomatic-rip has terminated unexpectedly. If you revert your
lpr to an earlier version does this problem persist? If yes, then the
problem is with foomatic-rip.

All of lpd configuration is in /etc/printcap so dpkg-reconfigure will
just restart lpd.
