it seems like the original explanation of the patch I provided is
incorrect and it's been a while, so I can't quite remember, how this
came about. :)
In fact the patch fixes the build with "ld --as-needed", which is the
default in Ubuntu and I verified that in the last two releases of Ubuntu
('raring' and 'saucy'), the patch still works as expected.
