PgPool-II 3.1.8 released on 2013-07-10 [1] includes a more general fix for this problem. It also provides several bugfixes without adding new functionality. Perhaps it's better to propose updating pgpool from 3.1.3 to 3.1.8 in Debian Wheezy (stable).
