Putting rc.auto=1 into either the /etc/dracut.conf or a newly created /etc/dracut.conf.d/10-auto.conf resulted in an error message when I reconfigured the dracut package to force a regeneration of the initrd images.

I added rc.auto=1 to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT var in the /etc/default/grub file and ran update-grub to generate a new grub configuration. Success!

Thank you so much for the assistance. I can't imagine why it would be necessary to remove that setting by default. Perhaps the README.Debian should mention it?
