I however believe that it would be a major fault if installation of
gnome would exchange the init system / pid1, so my expectation on
Debian would be that we integrate into a system where Gnome could be
used without systemd as pid1 or systemwide init-system (having gnome
require systemd to be installed as a "daemon" however would be ok,
same as e.g. cereal depends on runit - nothing new, and nothing
worrying).

"working without systemd" doesn't translate for me into "they are not
allowed to use new features of systemd", so it might be that gnomes
integration with systemd is better than with other init-systems /
pid1 providers. But I would consider it inappropriate if "apt-get
install gnome" replaces my initsystem / pid1.

Perhaps we could add an comment saying that as the situation is as of
above, we don't expect an issue programms requiring logind.
