Oh, thanks for the pointer. I did that locally now.

FWIW, my system had the configuration only in /etc/default/rcS and
it still took effect. My /etc/default/tmpfs has just #RAMTMP=no
(commented), apparently I missed this migration. :-)
Personally, I would find the outlined solution completely satisfying.
