Sure, bug catching isn't easy. And as we can see, software isn't perfect.

Claws is fine. I assume you are using the "old" mail account that comes
with your ISP account?
If so I would suggest the following.

Test all possibilities like IMAP vs IMAPs and SMTP vs SMTPs. If Claws is
working without issues than Thunderbird/Icedove will be the problem in
the end. :-(
Please open a bug at the Mozilla bugtracker with good infos around the
issue and how it can reproduce, like which distribution you use and what
settings you have used, what things you have tried to get a log. Be as
much precise as you can! Better to place more infos while opening the
bug report there than the developers has to ask every thing back. Topic
would be something like "Icedove/Thunderbird isn't working with
outlook.com over SMTP"

You find the Mozilla bugtracker at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/

If your bug is accepted there please give a feedback with a URL to the
bugreport upstream. We can add the URI here and the BTS will inform us
if the status is changing upstream.

I think no one else had this issue with Icedove and outlook.com before.
On the other side no one who is using Linux and free software will
probably use outlook.com as mail provider. ;)
