the next upload -- which includes a fix for #682062 -- has been ready for a while now, it's just that my regular sponsor for this package is quite busy at the moment. I'll ping him again about it, as it would be the simplest solution to the problem. The missing symbols thing is peculiar. I didn't see this when I prepared 1.8+dfsg-2, so I tried building 1.8+dfsg-1 (the one you based the NMU on) and indeed, I can reproduce the error. Bumping debhelper compat level from 7 to 9 makes the warning disappear. Looking at the additional build flags, it's not entirely obvious to me why this issue is no longer visible.
