It looks like it is still there on Alpha. I just installed gnome on a spare partition and gdm3 fails to start properly (bug #681195) which is reported therein as being to a segfault in gnome-settings-daemon. Looking back at Message #47 that I wrote, gosh, four years ago (!), I was suspicious of an incorrect relocation by the dynamic linker, which suggests a problem in the toolchain rather than gnome-settings-daemon. This is beyond my ability to debug further without guidance from someone with knowledge of the dynamic linker and how relocations are resolved.
