sure, but that change (cascaded patches in the debian packaging) doesn't
bother me.  some variant of this will eventually be adopted upstream, so
all these patches will be removed from the debian packaging sooner or later.

yep, now i'm just waiting on the build of 1.13-1, which i uploaded
earlier today (before i got this message).

If you think it's important to use the #else construct instead, i can
send out a patch v2 to usptream.
