I wasn't able to reproduce the issue as you described it. One common cause for weird behaviour in Hexchat is from people migrating configurations from XChat. Is this the case for you, and if so, can you try again with a clean config? Also, Hexchat 2.10.2-1 is currently in NEW, waiting to be processed and added to debian.
