For testing purposes, can you install the "sysvinit" package, run update-grub, then choose the sysvinit option in the grub advanced option on next reboot.
Does the problem happen under sysvinit as well? -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?
