I was looking for certain constelations that might consistently cause the creation of these zombie files and couldn't find any. The more I look into it, the less sense it makes to me. Could you grep for "smaug" in /var/log/apt-cacher-ng/apt*.log files? It should not appear there. If it does, please use the IP and/or time (its Unix UTC timestamp) to make further investigations. If that's not the case, please check the state of that files in case right before the daily cron job runs. I.e. file status (last modification time) and contents of .head files associated with them (please make a backup of that).
