thanks for the prompt reply according to http://www.winischhofer.net/sisdri.shtml the kernels later than 2.6.3 do not need sisfb and moreover I have tried it both ways (but, I will try again, just to be absolutely sure) anyway: I was using testing and Xorg 6.8.2 up to some days ago : all GL applications would said that DRI was OK, but the window was completely black (no display at all). This is why I tried to upgrade to unstable.
