This is mainly because there has never been as Debian stable release with a 5.0 :) Apart from the lack of support for ISAM tables (which should be converted to MyISAM anyway I have never been heard of an upgrade problem. Somewhen people simply have to upgrade and the upgrade is not forced. (At the time when Debian Etch is released there will even be a stable 5.1 version available...)
