That was it. My bad. With all the recent changes in gbp/pbuilder recently, I thought some underground change went unnoticed. I did try to run gbp with the --verbose option before reporting (as suggested by reportbug) but nothing noticeable came out. With all those possible configuration files, maybe --verbose (or --help, or a new --debug) should also tell in which configuration file each setting is taken from.
