On the other hand, if I uncomment the (require 'anything-startup) in /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50anything-el.el, then I can duplicate the hanging of emacs -q -batch. I suspect this is actually an emacs bug, and mostly unrelated to anything.el (except that it writes the same file every time emacs exits, thus triggering the emacs bug).
