I had a look at the code, and ended line 477 of image.c as the test that
decides to render or not.
Indeed, unchecking preferences/metadata/"write altered image orientation to
metadata" causes the rotation to be properly displayed (and then forgotten
when you close the program)
Line 477 of image.c is from "Fix #469 Exif rotation problems" nearly a year
ago, after the 1.3 release if I'm reading upstream's repo properly.
I'm not sure how the different options are supposed to work together, but
the current combination ("write orientation to metadata" causes orientation
not to be displayed) is probably not wanted.
