I don't see upstream flipping the switch as the option comes from pre-4.6.0 days and nobody has ever complained about it. Also, I think that deviating from upstream defaults, especially if it is not a policy-related decision is extremely annoying as it destroys uniform behavior across distributions. Finally, if any particular user doesn't like 'fake half tabs' option she/he is always free to switch it off.
