There is no relation between alsamixer and the Xserver. But hey,
maybe you put a shortcut to <F6>? Hit <F6> without starting
alsamixer and test your mouse.

Else you can change to a vt with <ctrl><alt><F1> login and start
alsamixer. Does it work like you want to?
