pristine-tar is not required at all for gbp operation and people use it without it. If you disable recommends (it defaults to on in apt) you should be able to cope with such problems. That said if somebody wants to come up with a better error message that fails upfront when pristine-tar is selected but not available I'm happy to apply it. Cheers, -- Guido
