There are key bindings to speed the game up and down, which are by default mapped to the numpad's plus and minus keys, respectively. Any chance that you hit them by accident during playing? It's probably best if you remove these key bindings. They can be found in the "Game Speed" Section on page 6 of the key bindings menu. - Fabian
