Package: thunderbird
Version: 1:78.7.1-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

the company I work for uses XMPP for communicating internally. Some time
ago I tried to switch to Thunderbird as
an XMPP client. Before that I used pidgin. I noticed that the connection
was not reliable and after some time
it became clear that the connection did not work whenever I connected to
our internal network via OpenVPN. After a
some more digging I also found out that there are several other
colleagues with the same problem all of which use Debian testing or
unstable.
I did not find someone with the same issue who uses a different
operating system. I tried a Windows 10 VM myself and it worked.
Other XMPP Clients also work without issues.

When connecting to the XMPP server is see the "Connecting: Initializing
encryption" message, however after some time
the connection times out and Thunderbird tries again. I checked in
Wireshark and I see what looks to me like a
normal STARTTLS handshake but after three minutes I get an encryption
alert. Sometimes after hours of trying it does connect and after that
the connection is reliable (until I try to reconnect).

Note that this issues only exists via VPN.

The XMPP server is "Ignite Realtime Openfire Jabber server 3.10.0 or
later" (this is the sever banner, if you need
more detailed information let me know, I think I can provide it if
necessary).

If you need more information let me know, I will provide them as soon as
possible.

Thank you for your time and the great operating system you are providing.

Best regards

Stefan
