Hm, i misread/misremembered what 981587 was about -- that was specifically a bug how fontconfig prunes DejaVu monospace variants, not about fontconfig preferring Bitstream Vera over DejaVu. I think this bug needs to be fixed in fontconfig somehow -- fontconfig needs to prefer DejaVu fonts over Bitstream Vera when DejaVu is available. But i don't understand how fontconfig works well enough to know how to change this prioritization. --dkg
