Package: dgit Version: 11.3 The troubles with --overwrite's name and docs are raising their head again. This time, we had a user who really wanted, probably, --overwrite --split-view=always
The context was the debhelper package, which is team maintained. Not all the team members use dgit and there was a desire to avoid merging the dgit history (again) into the salsa branch. The user had a mental model that included dgit always separating the dgit git history from the maintainer git history. This is probably a not uncommon mental model. It will be consistent with the experience of doing an NMU, and the experiences of uploading from quilt unapplied histories. It is wrong only when the package is native (or dgitishly applied) *and* the developer is not making a NMU. But that situation can arise easily in teams where only some team members use dgit. We should do something better about this situation. I'm not sure precisely what. Maybe make the docs for --overwrite even longer by adding a cross reference to --split-view ?
