Thank you for reporting this bug and helping to make Debian better.

Generally, we do not want to see notifications for new upstream
releases for things that are packaged in Debian because it encourages
people to try to install software manually instead of by using the
Debian packages.

That means that if this feature were working, we would probably
disable it. Therefore, I think we will be closing this bug.
