There is a PPA repo with a test version of qemu to try, but sadly I
don't have Ubuntu installed to be able to use it.

Yes, all this looks similar. I can provide a build (set of .deb files)
of qemu with this change applied (if you have issues rebuilding it
locally) - can any of you please verify if that patch fixes the
issue for you?
