Some possible ways to address that:

  * Provide fakeroot wrapper only as example script
  * Register fakeroot wrapper only optionally, using debconf
  * Only document how _user_ can register fakeroot wrapper
  * Provide fakeroot wrapper in separate package fakeroot-pseudo

I changed the alternative priority, so that should fix things for a
while. I think I will either make it work better in the future, or
provide debconf-based choice to the user, so let's keep this bug open
for now.

I see that you removed the Provides in Jan 2022 but reverted it in Aug 2022. Do you still remember why you reverted it?

Currently the provides breaks builds in experimental that depends on fakeroot via Rules-Requires-Root: binary-targets as the cudf apt solver is used there. For example:

https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=exim4&arch=amd64&ver=4.99%7ERC1-1&stamp=1756919050&raw=0

Given the pseudo is not in stable, can you drop the Provides again?

Cheers Jochen
