FTR: The discussion #1095231 leaves an open question. What do we call the name that was previously also called "component". That is, in the additional tarball package.orig-FOO.tar.gx what is "FOO" ?
The term I'm looking for is one that would fit in place of "wombat" intos sentences like these: package.orig-&!.tar.gx hws syntactically invalid wombat '&!'. we extract the orig tarball filename's wombat into $wombat The commit in dpkg.git https://git.dpkg.org/cgit/dpkg/dpkg.git/diff/?id=a970502d8 calls this the "addon", or "addon part". +tarballs (B<.orig->I<addon>B<.tar.>I<ext>). +I<addon> can only contain alphanumeric (‘a-zA-Z0-9’) characters +B<.orig->I<addon>B<.tar.>I<ext>B<.asc>), extraction +tarballs are extracted in subdirectories named after the I<addon> part of their filename (any pre-existing directory is replaced).
