Frankly, no - and I see this very bugreport as a reason to *enable*
doctests: It seems evident to me that doctests can reveal flaws in
packaging, upstream code or dependent code, and that it therefore is
wrong in practice (despite a theoretic ideal) that they exist "solely
[...] for upstream validating their code against the documentation
published".

Please do try to elaborate, if you suspect that I might be blind to
something here.
