i386 is no longer a release arch, true. However, it is a partial
archictecture. It should be -- on best effort base -- supported if
possible for multi-arch setups, especially if there are reverse
dependencies.  See

This bug is easy to fix -- just disable asm generation for i386 and
keep i386 floating. 

Please consider reopening this bug.
