Can you elaborate why it fails, I'm not following development of mariadb closely.
Also, as we are moving away from default-mysql-* packages in Forky (https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2026/05/msg00161.html) I would recommend moving uses of default-mysql-* in general to mariadb compat | mysql. I've attached a patch that handles both updates.
How is Ubuntu handling this? I asked Otto in bug 1137295 but never got an answer.
Anyways, this package has it's Maintainer field set to "Debian Commons" [1], feel free to upload changes as you see fit.
