I was able to prepare a patch [1] to the upstream tree to resolve this FTBFS, which I have posted as a GitLab snippet on Salsa since the VCS [2] is a bit out-of-date for an MR. This led to a successful build in unstable with local sbuild.
Would you possibly be able to review this and sponsor an upload if acceptable please?
In the longer term, I would be happy to help maintain this package and resolve the other RC bugs, as three of my packages are reverse-depends. Would it perhaps be possible to update the VCS as a start?
