Package: python-dateutil Version: 3.0.0-2 The debian package python3-dateutil recently was changed to depend on the debian package tzdata, and not on the python tzdata anymore. This makes sense to avoid duplication (python-dateutil will use the system tzdata if the python tzdata is not available).
However when trying to install debian's python-dateutil inside a venv, the dependency on python tzdata is still in the metadata and it leads to tzdata getting downloaded and used instead of the system variant. This is inconsistent and can lead to problems when attempting to install into the venv without network access. Reproducer:
$ podman run --rm -it debian:unstable bash # apt update # apt install python3-pip python3-dateutil python3-venv # python3 -m venv --system-site-packages venv # source venv/bin/activate (venv) root@ac45f3a664a3:/# pip install python-dateutil Requirement already satisfied: python-dateutil in ./usr/lib/python3/dist-packages (3.0.0) Collecting tzdata (from python-dateutil) Downloading tzdata-2026.6-py2.py3-none-any.whl.metadata (1.4 kB) Downloading tzdata-2026.6-py2.py3-none-any.whl (348 kB) Installing collected packages: tzdata Successfully installed tzdata-2026.6
Could somebody make it so that it doesn't attempt to download tzdata in that scenario by removing the python tzdata dependency from the python metadata?
