Assuming that the release notes for etch will be structured similarly to the sarge ones, this belongs in Chapter 5 "Issues to be aware of for etch", and should be early in that chapter since exim 3 was the default MTA in Debian for years and thus has an extremely broad range of installations. ------- Upgrading from exim 3 to exim4. One of the packages that has been obsoleted by the etch release is the Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) exim, which has been replaced by the entirely new package exim4. exim 3 has been unmaintained upsteam for years, and Debian has stopped support for exim 3 as well. Please upgrade your exim 3 installation to exim4 manually. Since exim4 is already part of sarge, you can choose to do the upgrade on your sarge system before the etch upgrade, or after the etch upgrade at your convenience. Just remember that your exim 3 package is not going to be upgraded and that it won't get security support after support for sarge was discontinued. The exim4 packages in Debian are extensively documented. The package's home page is http://wiki.debian.org/PkgExim4 on the Debian Wiki, and the README file can be found at http://pkg-exim4.alioth.debian.org/README/etch/README.Debian.html and inside the packages as well. The README file has a chapter about Packaging, which explains the different package variations we offer, and it has a chapter about Updating from Exim 3, which will help you in doing the actual transition. ------- Notes: - the URL to the README file does not exist yet, I'll create that one over the weekend (as updated from svn until etch release, and static pulled from the etch packages afterwards). - this text needs to be adapted once the SRM team has decided whether the exim 3 description upgrade will be allowed into a sarge point release or not.
