I'm also experiencing this problem. The kernel takes forever to load portmap when I have auto eth1 in /etc/network/interfaces (about 5 minutes from power on to entrance). When I comment it out it loads properly. I'm also experiencing this problem when I shutdown or reboot, this eventually forces me to do a hard shutdown. Interestingly, I only started having problems with portmap after I encrypted my wireless network. Before I had no problems with it. Right now I'm running a start up script to circumvent this kernel loading issue, however when I shutdown if I forget to deactivate eth1, the kernel halts at 'stopping portmap'.
