I just set up a fresh etch system in a vmware machine. I installed the
"Desktop" and "Standard system" tasks and manually added the packages
xfig and gsfonts-x11 as well as the vmware tools. After this some
fonts weren't available ("xset fp rehash" didn't solve it), so I
restarted the X server and from this point all necessary fonts were
available in scalable sizes.

On my test system it's similar, but more restricted:

gsfonts install
gsfonts-x11 install
xfonts-100dpi install
xfonts-75dpi install
xfonts-base install
xfonts-encodings install
xfonts-scalable install
xfonts-utils install

I installed the missing packages (msttcorefonts texlive-fonts-extra
texlive-fonts-recommended ttf-sjfonts), but this didn't change the
(working) situation. Also another reboot didn't break my fonts.

As a test case I open fonts.fig from
http://www.spinnaker.de/tmp/fonts.fig in xfig, which should show all
usual postscript fonts and should be scalable, which it is on my
system.

Same here.

Nothing different to my test system.

So I still need help to find out, what is going wrong on your
systems as long as I cannot reproduce the problems...

Tschoeeee
