I'd like my monospace font to be luxi mono i.s.o. of bitstream mono. How do I do that in local.conf?

The following should work (and works for me):

<alias>
        <family>monospace</family>
        <prefer>
                <family>Luxi Mono</family>
        </prefer>
</alias>

I placed this in ~/.fonts.conf (wrapped in suitable XML sugar).

You can test this with 'fc-match' which will let you isolate application issues from basic font configuration problems:

$ fc-match monospace
luximr.ttf: "Luxi Mono" "Regular"

-keith

Thanks,

I made a mistake in the local.conf :-(. It works now if I put your suggestion in there.

Thanks again

Jaap
