Assuming you do have xfonts-base installed, it looks as though your
font paths are set incorrectly.  Could you please tell us what settings
you use (Section "Files" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf) ?

Reconfiguring xserver-xorg to create a new xorg.conf will probably fix
the problem.
