Ok, then it seems to really be gedit specific, thanks for the tests. Can you please rebuild gedit with debugging symbols and get a backtrace of all threads during a freeze? If you're not familiar with gdb, <http://wiki.debian.org/HowToGetABacktrace> has the details. I hope this will help.
