as the new co-maintainer of smstools i wanted to drop a note about this bug: In the current unstable version of smstools its not yet packaged. But the new upstream author prepared a beta for me, which i will test carefully and as soon as possible. We wanna have a stable version with this new feature added, so it may take some days more until we both reach a new stable version, which will close this issue.
